After it became clear a few days ago that Italy's national team won't be able to count on striker Christian Vieri in the World Cup taking place in Germany in June, it is now clear that defender Aimo Diana will also have to be removed from the team's roster.
The 28-year-old defender suffered a serious groin injury and will not be able to recover in time for the World Championship starting next month. It is speculated that 29-year-old Roma defender Massimo Oddo will likely be called to replace this defender in the national team.
As previously announced, Italy's national team in Germany will also be missing their long-time striker Christian Vieri, who recently underwent knee surgery.
"I had a very clear picture of the national team in my mind, but these injuries forced me to make some changes," said Italy's coach Marcello Lippi. - "Both Vieri and Diana are injured and won't be able to properly prepare for the World Cup, so now I have to decide how to replace these footballers."
Italy will start the World Cup in Group E, alongside Czech Republic, Ghana, and the United States. The Italians will play their first match on June 12th against Ghana in Hanover.
