In seventh place in the English Premier League, Newcastle extended the contract with their main goalkeeper Shay Given until 2011.
The 30-year-old Irish national team goalkeeper arrived at Newcastle for 1.5 million pounds sterling in 1997 from Blackburn.
Although Newcastle had defensive problems this year and conceded 55 goals in 38 matches, Shay Given was one of the most reliable players on the team.
"I am extremely happy to have extended the contract," Given said on the club's website.
At the end of the newly signed contract, Given, who was included in the symbolic Premier League team of the season, will be 35 years old.
Given became the temporary captain of the team at the end of the season after Alan Shearer's injury.
In the summer of this year, the goalkeeper was named the Irish Player of the Year.
