On Friday, the English Football Association (FA) announced the all-time best England Cup tournament team, which was selected by the clubs themselves. It includes four players from "Manchester United" and two from "West Ham United."
The best goalkeeper chosen is the Dane Peter Schmeichel. The defenders are Denis Irwin and Stuart Pearce. The midfielders are 1966 World Cup champion Bobby Moore and "Arsenal" legend Tony Adams.
In the safety line-up are the shining star from 50 years ago, Stanley Matthews, the "West Ham" star of the eighth decade Trevor Brooking, and Ryan Giggs, who has won four cups and still plays.
The line-up of attackers is even more impressive – Eric Cantona, Gary Lineker, and "Liverpool" legend Ian Rush, who scored 44 goals in the FA Cup tournaments, 5 of which were in the finals.
This team would be coached by Sir Alex Ferguson.
At the beginning of the year, in the elections that started, the FA surveyed as many as 125 clubs (92 from the four leagues and 33 from the conference championships). Each club had to name five players they considered to be the best of all time in the England Cup tournament and one coach. In total, over 600 footballers and 25 coach names were mentioned.
Here is how this symbolic team would line up on the field:
Goalkeeper: P.Schmeichel ("Manchester United")
Defenders: Denis Irwin ("Manchester United"), Bobby Moore ("West Ham United"), Tony Adams ("Arsenal"), Stuart Pearce ("Nottingham Forest")
Safeties: Stanley Matthews ("Blackpool"), Trevor Brooking ("West Ham United"), Ryan Giggs ("Manchester United")
Attackers: Gary Lineker ("Leicester City"), Ian Rush ("Liverpool"), Eric Cantona ("Manchester United")
Coach – Sir Alex Ferguson ("Manchester United").
