"The goalkeeper of the French national team, Fabien Barthez, will leave after the season," said the President of the French club, Pape Diouf, on Saturday.
"After the season, Fabien will leave the team. He confirmed that he will leave the team for personal reasons, not for money, game-related problems, or disagreements with teammates," said P. Diouf to the French sports newspaper "L'Equipe."
P. Diouf also added that the main goalkeeper of the team should be Cedric Carasso, who substituted for F. Barthez when the latter was suspended for five months for hitting a referee. "This is logical," the president motivated the decision.
Barthez will play his last game with "Marseille" against "Bordeaux" today. Marseille has not won against this club since 1977. Currently, Marseille is in fourth place and is competing with "Lille" for the last spot in the UEFA Champions League.
However, it remains uncertain what Barthez will do next year. It is speculated that he may retire, move to a foreign club, or return to "Toulouse," where he began his professional career in 1990.
