After a 25-year break, the champions of Switzerland became Zurich on Saturday, winning a dramatic match against their main competitors Basel 2-1 and overtaking them only due to a better goal difference.
In the match held at the St. Jakobs stadium in Basel, the victory was snatched by Zurich in extra time - with what was probably the last shot of the game, Romanian defender Iulian Filipescu scored the only goal for him this season.
During the winter break, Basel had an eight-point lead over Zurich, but the latter achieved seven consecutive victories and reduced the gap.
The Swiss champions receive the only ticket allocated to the country for the UEFA Champions League.
The victory won by Zurich on Saturday also broke the Swiss record - Basel had not lost a single home match in 59 consecutive Swiss championship matches.
