In the 5th place of the recently completed German "Bundesliga" championship and earning the right to play in the UEFA Cup next season, Leverkusen club announced that they have extended the contract with the defender from Brazil, Juan.

The 27-year-old Brazilian national team defender signed a new contract on Sunday, which obliges the player to stay in the club until 2009. This is joyful news for "Bayer" fans, as the longtime German national team defender Jens Nowotny recently announced his intentions to leave the club in the summer.

"We are very pleased that a player of the caliber of Juan has agreed to stay in our team," said "Bayer" sports director and former German national team coach Rudi Voller. "This decision by the defender shows that our team can once again play European-level football."

Juan arrived at "Bayer" in 2002 from the "Flamengo" team and has since played in 134 matches for the club.
