For the fifth time in club history, the club achieved a national double - winning the Portuguese championship and the Portuguese Cup by defeating last year's cup winners Setubal's "Vitoria" footballers 1-0 in the final on Sunday.

The only goal of the match was scored in the 39th minute by the Brazilian Adriano after a header pass from Ricardo Quaresma.

"Porto", winning the Portuguese championship, and the second-placed Lisbon "Sporting" received tickets to the next season's group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, the third-placed Lisbon "Benfica" in the Portuguese championship will have to compete in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

The tickets to the UEFA Europa League were won by the fourth and fifth-placed clubs in the national championship, respectively the clubs "Braga" and "Nacional Madeira", as well as the Portuguese Cup finalists the "Vitoria" footballers.

"Belenenses", "Rio Ave", "Vitoria Guimaraes" and "Penafiel" clubs will leave the highest Portuguese league, but they will be replaced by only two clubs from the second division - "Beira Mar" and "Desportivo das Aves". This is happening because from the next season the number of participants in the Portuguese championship is reduced from 18 to 16.
