The champions of Ukraine for the second consecutive year were the footballers from Donetsk, who defeated Kiev's team 2-1 in extra time on Sunday.

The winning goal in extra time was scored by Nigerian national team striker Julius Aghahowa. The main match ended 1-1: "Shakhtar" took the lead after 59 minutes with a goal from Romanian Ciprian Marica, but twenty minutes later Brazilian Rodolfo equalized the score after coming on as a substitute.

This was the second meeting between the two clubs in a week - on Wednesday, both teams played to a 2-2 draw in the final round of the Ukrainian championship, finishing with 75 points each, leading to extra time.

The Sunday match was officiated by FIFA referee Lubos Michel from Slovakia, replacing Englishman Steve Bennett, who was not favored by "Shakhtar" before the match.

"Dynamo" and "Shakhtar" have dominated Ukrainian football since 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed. "Dynamo" won the Ukrainian championship in 1993-2001 and 2003-2004, while "Shakhtar" won in 2002 and 2005.
