In the UEFA Champions League final on Wednesday, the sideline referee from Norway, Ole Hermann Borgan, caused a commotion among fans and officials of both finalists after posing for his country's journalists wearing "Barcelona" jerseys.
The 41-year-old referee posed for the Norwegian publication "Drammens Tidende," which will appear just on Wednesday, wearing the traditional blue and red "Barca" jerseys. Now Borgan admits that his gesture was thoughtless and foolish.
"Now I realize that I should not have done that," Borgan said. "But when I was asked to wear the 'Barcelona' jersey, I did not think about the possible consequences."
Nevertheless, the referee assured that his gesture would not hinder his performance in the decisive match of the most prestigious European tournament.
In the final match, Borgan will officiate alongside his fellow countrymen. As announced earlier, the main referee of the match will be another Norwegian, Terje Hauge. It is worth mentioning that Hauge is the same referee who received a lot of criticism from "Chelsea" manager Jose Mourinho when he sent off English defender Asier Del Horno during the Champions League quarter-final match against the same "Barcelona."
