Brazilian leader Ronaldinho claims that a poor start to the season took away the team's chances of becoming Spanish champions.

Barcelona has been demonstrating an impressive form in the second half of the season and has not lost any Spanish championship matches since January 4, when they unexpectedly lost 3-0 to Racing Santander.

The Catalan club currently occupies third place in the Spanish championship, trailing only one point behind second-placed Real Madrid, but Ronaldinho stated that the team deeply regrets the points lost at the beginning of the season.

"We started the season very poorly," said the 24-year-old Brazilian. "It will be a painful lesson for us not to do the same next year. Now, we constantly have in mind that if we had played even slightly better at the beginning of the season, today we would be fighting for the title of champions."

"Now all we can do is win the remaining three matches and hope for the failures of our rivals," Ronaldinho continued pessimistically. "If only at the beginning of the second [Spanish championship] round we had been in the top four..."

Asked about the possibility of winning the award for the best footballer in the world, Ronaldinho was humble: "I don't think I am the best player in the world. I just try to play as well as possible and it brings me joy. I live for football. I enjoy playing well and helping the team."
