And Germany national team midfielder Dietmar Hamann has announced that he is ending his career with the national team and will focus all his attention on club football.
The 32-year-old midfielder was not included in the squad for the World Cup starting in June, but the player admitted that he did not expect a call-up from Jurgen Klinsmann.
"It's not a surprise to me that I wasn't called up to the national team," Hamann told the official Liverpool website. "I haven't spoken to the coach for more than three months and I knew I wouldn't be called up."
"This marks the end of my international career. The World Cup would have been my last tournament with the Germany national team, but now I will watch it on TV."
"I'm not disappointed that these World Cup will be held in my homeland Germany, because I previously played in two great tournaments in France and Japan and South Korea, where I had a really wonderful time."
Hamann made his debut for the Germany national team in 1997 and scored a goal in his debut match against South Africa. The last goal for the Liverpool midfielder also came at the legendary Wembley Stadium. In total, he played 59 matches for the national team during his career.
In the 2002 World Cup, the German was one of the key players for the national team and helped them reach the final, where they were defeated by the eventual champions Brazil. Hamann played his last match for the national team last August against the Netherlands and has not been called up to the team since.
