As confirmed by club president Fernando Lamikiz on Tuesday, former Spanish national team coach Javier Clemente will lead the team for another year.
J. Clemente took over at the helm of Athletic Bilbao at the end of last October, when the club was in last place in the Spanish championship. However, the coach not only managed to improve the Basque team's game, but also raised them to 13th place in the league standings.
J. Clemente's players finished the season with a great 3-1 victory against the reigning Spanish champions, Barcelona, many of whose leaders did not play in that match.
During the press conference, F. Lamikiz also revealed that the club's financial situation is not bad and he has secure income for the next five years. "If necessary, we can strengthen the team with players from other clubs," said the president.
However, it is worth mentioning that Athletic Bilbao is known for having only players with Basque citizenship in their squad.
