As reported on Tuesday, Jean Fernandez resigned from the position of head coach of the main club.
“After a meeting between Jean Fernandez and president Pape Diouf, the resignation request was accepted,” the statement released on the club's website said. “Jean Fernandez cited personal reasons as the reason for his resignation. The club respects his choice and wishes him success. Meanwhile, we will work hard to find a new coach.”
Former “Marseille” player, now 51-year-old J. Fernandez took over the club's helm last June and signed a two-year contract.
At the end of a rather turbulent season, "Marseille" fell into a hole and finished only in fifth place on the league table. They failed to secure a berth in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League, and in the French Cup final, "Marseille" lost to "PSG".
There have been reports in the media that J. Fernandez could become the new coach of "Auxerre", which dismissed Jacques Santini as coach on May 17th.
