The club playing in the French "Ligue 1" has been looking for a replacement for the dismissed head coach Jean Fernandez for some time now. According to the latest reports, the club's current target is the unemployed Italian Claudio Ranieri.
Fernandez was dismissed from his position as head coach of "Marseille" after the end of the French championship, in which the team finished 5th this year and did not qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Initially, the former player and strategist of "Monaco," Didier Deschamps, was linked with "Marseille," but he declined the offer of the position.
Later, the club offered the position of head coach to Gernot Rohr, the coach of the French U-21 national team, but he also declined the offer. Now, as reported by the French press, the most likely candidate to fill the vacant position in the team is the former coach of "Chelsea" and "Valencia," Claudio Ranieri.
Under Ranieri's leadership, the London team reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League two years ago, but despite this achievement, the coach was dismissed from his position and moved to "Valencia." In Spain, Ranieri did not fare well, and after an unsuccessful season, he was dismissed. Until now, he has not coached any club.
The president of "Marseille," Pape Diouf, stated that he would like to see the Italian football specialist in his club next season. He also hinted that he would like Cristiano Damiano, former assistant coach of "Fulham," to be Ranieri's assistant.
If Ranieri were to refuse becoming the coach of "Marseille," the club is prepared to appoint the current sports director of the team, Jose Anigo, to this position. In that case, Albert Emon would become his assistant.
