Spanish midfielder Gabri will represent the Amsterdam club next season and will join the new coach of the Dutch capital's club, Hank Ten Cate. The player and strategist spent the last three seasons together in the team, where H. Ten Cate worked as an assistant to F. Rijkaard.
After becoming the head coach of Ajax, H. Ten Cate expressed his desire to see Gabri in his team after the Spaniard announced that he would not remain in the Barcelona team. The player, capable of playing in defensive positions, agreed to move to the Netherlands and signed a three-year contract with Ajax.
"I chose Ajax because of the coach, whom I know well after three years spent together at the Barcelona club. He convinced me that it was a good decision."
"Ajax is a famous club, which, like Barcelona, has an excellent system for developing young players, so I think I will quickly adapt to the club and its football culture," said the former graduate of the Barcelona youth school.
For Gabri, this will be only the second club in his career, as until then he spent thirteen years with the Catalan giants. Representing the main Barcelona team, Gabri won the Spanish championship title twice, and this year he made history by also winning the UEFA Champions League title. In 1999, Gabri, together with the Spanish U-20 national team, won the World Championship and represented the Spanish national team three times.
