Player was born in Angola, but after the declaration of independence from Portugal in 1975, Joao left his parents, moved to Portugal and started attending football training sessions. He is one of the most experienced defenders in the team. This midfielder scored his first goal in his first match in 1999 against the Malawi team, spending only 13 minutes on the field. He won the African Youth (U-20) Championship in 2001, and the team was then coached by current coach Oliveira Goncalaves.
