The head coach Rafael Benitez joined the discussions that FIFA clubs should pay compensation if players get injured while representing their national team.
The summer transfer plans of the team that finished third in the English championship were significantly complicated when striker Djibril Cisse broke his leg in a friendly match. The footballer had been in negotiations with the club for some time and was likely to return to play in his homeland, but after this injury, the leaders of Marseille's team temporarily rejected the possibility of acquiring D. Cisse.
Due to this injury, the Frenchman will not be able to play for about four months and will most likely have to stay with the "Liverpool" team.
"When I spoke with colleagues at the UEFA coaches' meeting, this issue was one of the most relevant," - said R. Benitez. - The situation is this - we have a player who is very valuable to the "Liverpool" club and suffers a serious injury preparing for the World Cup. But we still have to pay his salary, and we can't sell the footballer either.
"It is clear that there are mistakes in the rules. We not only lost a player, but also suffered significant financial losses.
"If FIFA doesn't want to pay, well, then maybe clubs should not allow players to join national teams. The team loses one of its key players, and the results of the next season largely depend on that."
"Liverpool" has suffered from this before - I know that another striker Milan Baros suffered an injury while on national duty last year," the Spaniard said.
It is believed that FIFA could compensate the salary of an injured player during the rehabilitation period.
