The victory of the Portuguese national team against Mexico with a score of 2-1 meant that the team's coach Luiz Felipe Scolari became a record holder - four years ago, coaching his homeland's national team, the Brazilian specialist won all the matches in the planet's first championship and continued his winning streak in this tournament to 10 matches with the Portuguese team.
However, speaking at a press conference, the coach stated that he did not want this to overshadow Portugal's first place in Group D: "Ten victories in a championship is something that would leave a mark in anyone's life, especially in mine. As we expected, it was a tough match, but I asked my players to make it difficult for me to pick the starting lineup in the next stage, and they did it."
Hitting a hundred percent result in the group, the current coach L.F. Scolari aimed to repeat his winning streak in the second consecutive championship - he would need to win four more times and lead the Portuguese to the title of World Champions. In the tenth consecutive successful match, the Portuguese defeated Mexico after goals from Maniche and Simao Sabrosa, and a tough fight.
"These were not the perfect matches, but I think the team played well from start to finish. Three matches left until the final, and they are the toughest. We just have to keep working hard every day," the coach said.
