During the World Cup E group match, Italy's national team and "Roma" club goalkeeper Daniele De Rossi, who elbow-struck an opponent from the USA, received a four-game suspension.
The 22-year-old player, who was sent off the field for striking Brian McBride, already missed Italy's match against Czech Republic and may only play in the 2006 World Cup if his team makes it to the final.
"FIFA stated that they gave him a four-game, not five-game suspension because they considered the letter sent by De Rossi, in which he apologized for his behavior," said Italian Football Federation press representative Antonello Valentini.
After D. De Rossi's expulsion, the Italians ended the match against the USA in a draw, but despite this, in the final group stage match they defeated Czech Republic and clinched the first place to advance to the knockout stage, where they will face the Australian national team.
