On Monday, the St. Petersburg club, competing in the Russian "Premier" league, announced that the team will be coached by specialist Dick Advocaat from the Netherlands, who signed a one and a half year contract with the possibility to extend it for another year.
D. Advocaat was the head coach of South Korea and managed to qualify the team for the World Cup, but on Friday the team lost a crucial match to Switzerland 2-0 in the group stage and was eliminated from further competitions. The strategist, who did not renew his contract with the Asian national team, accepted the offer from the St. Petersburg club.
"Zenit", represented by Lithuanian national team forward Robertas Poskus, stated on the official website that the 58-year-old strategist, replacing former head coach Vlastimil Petržela who stepped down last month, will arrive in Russia next Monday, July 6, and is set to make his debut in a match against Moscow's "Dynamo".
In 2004, D. Advocaat coached the Dutch national team and managed to reach the semi-finals of the European Championship, where they suffered a defeat to their eternal rivals, the Portuguese national team. In his previous career, the coach has also worked with Eindhoven's "PSV" and Glasgow's "Rangers" clubs.
