The outsider of the Lithuanian "A League" championship, Kėdainiai, has a new head coach. The country's national team's assistant head coach, and the strategist of the Lithuanian youth national team (up to 21 years old), Vitalijus Stankevičius, has taken over the position, replacing Vytautas Vaškūnas, who had been the head coach for over a year.
The 48-year-old football specialist has previously coached "Nevėžis". Stankevičius worked with this team from January 2004 to April 2005.
"V. Stankevičius began coaching "Nevėžis" on June 29th. Whether V. Vaškūnas will remain in the team, I cannot say yet. We hope that with the arrival of an experienced football specialist, the team's game and results will improve," said Saulius Skibiniauskas, the club's manager, to alyga.lt.
From July 1st, A League clubs can register new football players. Will there be newcomers in "Nevėžis"? "We plan to invite some. Stankevičius is observing the team, and he will decide who to release and who to accept," said Skibiniauskas.
"Yesterday I led the first training session. Since I left "Nevėžis", the team has changed by 50 percent. There are many young players in the Kėdainiai club, lent by FBK "Kaunas" and Panevėžio "Ekranas". These guys are promising. We will try to help them rise to a higher level," said Stankevičius officially to the "A League" website.
He stated that he would like Vaškūnas to remain in the team. "I would be satisfied if he agreed to stay. Together we could achieve more," affirmed the new "Nevėžis" strategist.
Stankevičius said he will strive to strengthen the team. "I would like us to finish the season not in tenth, but in ninth place," the coach hoped.
