Finishing in third place in the World Cup, the attack leader of the host team Germany, Miroslav Klose, who scored five goals, became the tournament's top scorer and won the Golden Boot award.
Klose, of Polish descent, scored five goals and became the record holder of World Cup goals at the previous tournament held in South Korea and Japan four years ago, making him the most successful World Cup player.
Klose also became the first player since 1962 to win the Golden Boot by scoring relatively few goals. The last similar case was recorded in the 1962 World Cup held in Chile, where three players each scored four goals and became the top scorers.
The German striker scored two goals in the first World Cup match against Costa Rica, scored twice in the group stage match against Ecuador, and scored the equalizer in the quarterfinal match against the Argentine national team.
The 28-year-old player left behind a group of players who scored three goals each, including Hernan Crespo (Argentina), Fernando Torres (Spain), Thierry Henry (France), Maxi Rodriguez (Argentina), Lukas Podolski (Germany), Ronaldo (Brazil), David Villa (Spain), and the best player of the tournament, Zinedine Zidane (France).
