UEFA Champions League winners' president Joan Laporta announced that he and the entire club board will resign next Tuesday as demanded by the Spanish court.
"I intend to participate in the elections once again to defend the interests of Barcelona," Laporta said after an emergency board meeting convened on Friday.
On Tuesday, Spanish judge Roberto Garcia Ceniceros granted the complaint of three club members regarding Laporta's expired term and ordered the club to hold new presidential elections in the near future.
The judge based his decision on the club's statutes, which count the years from July to June. Therefore, when Laporta officially took office as Barcelona's president on June 22, 2003, he did not serve for 8 days until July 1, but for a year.
According to this calculation, Laporta's term ended on June 30 of this year.
Meanwhile, Barcelona stated its intention to challenge the court's decision.
