Liverpool defender Joseph Yobo has signed a new four-year contract with the club, which will now be valid until 2010.

The 25-year-old Nigerian national team defender expressed his desire to extend his contract two weeks ago and after negotiations concluded on Saturday, he officially signed it.

"I waited a long time for everything to finally be sorted out," the player told the club's website. "There were no doubts about whether I am happy, I wanted to stay at the club. I spoke with manager David Moyes, he told me about the club's ambitions and then I decided I wanted to stay."

In the summer of 2002, J.Yobo was loaned to "Marseille" from France by "Everton," and in 2003, the player signed a long-term contract with the club. Recently, delayed negotiations over his contract linked him with a move to London's "Arsenal." In Liverpool, the Nigerian has played 98 matches, and he has represented his national team 17 times.

After a very successful 2004/2005 season, when "Everton" finished in 4th place in the English Premier League, the club for the first time in history reached the UEFA Champions League qualification matches, but lost to last year's semi-finalists "Villarreal." In the 2005/2006 English championship, "Everton" started quite nervously: for a long time, the club was at the bottom of the league table, but eventually managed to climb out and finished in 11th place.
