As announced on Wednesday evening, the presidential elections of the Catalan superclub will take place on the third day of September this year. A couple of hours before that, the president Joanas Laporta and the club's board resigned from their positions.
Meanwhile, from Wednesday until the elections, economist Xavier Sala y Martin will temporarily assume the duties of the president of "Barcelona".
J. Laporta and the board resigned because last week the Spanish court ordered the presidential elections, following a complaint from three club members regarding Laporta's four-year term, which had technically already ended.
This situation arose because according to the club's statutes, the year is counted from July to June, and the first 8 days of J. Laporta's presidency were officially counted as a full year. Therefore, his term officially ended on June 30 of this year.
On Wednesday, the Spanish court rejected the request of four club members to prevent J. Laporta from participating in the new presidential elections, so the former president, who has earned the sympathies of many "Barcelona" fans, will run to regain his position.
J. Laporta's chances of regaining the position are increased by the fact that his main competitor, former vice president Sandro Rossell, expressed intentions not to participate in the elections.
It is still unclear whether there will be other candidates for the presidency besides Joanas Laporta, as many potential candidates complain about the timing of the election campaign, which coincides with summer vacations.
