Yesterday and the day before yesterday, the 36th round of the French championship matches were played, after which only two teams remained in the battle for the champions' cup - Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain.
"Lyon" players are very close to their third championship title in the last three years. By securing a victory against Bordeaux, the current French champions, they are now leading second-placed Monaco by four points and even have the right to lose one of the remaining two matches.
After this round, the club that was fighting for the title until now, Saint-Etienne, withdrew from the title race after suffering a 0-3 defeat to Toulouse on Tuesday, leaving them with no hope of competing for a place in the UEFA Cup. Following this setback, the Paris team is now six points behind the leaders, Lyon, and due to a worse ratio of goals scored and conceded, they can no longer rise to the first position.
However, "P.S.G" can still fight for the second place as Monaco also failed to beat their opponents and lost to Toulouse by just two points. Without securing a victory, Monaco has also complicated their situation in the battle for the championship title. With just two rounds left, only a great success can bring them the championship gold.
Still, the fight for survival continues with the footballers of Lens, who have not lost for four consecutive matches. A few weeks ago, they were last but are now leading Le Mans, who are in 20th place, by four points and still have a chance to remain in Ligue 1.
Angers moved up to fourth place by defeating Nimes 3-1. This was aided by the finalists of this season's French League Cup, who lost again this time 0-1 to the bottom-placed Dijon.
