The French club acquired former defender Mario Melchiot for an undisclosed sum, signing a one-year contract with the "Ligue 1" team.
At the end of this season, the Netherlands left "Birmingham" as his contract expired. Several clubs were interested in the services of this player, but the fight for the signature of the 29-year-old defender was won by "Rennes". M. Melchiot hopes to make his debut this week when "Rennes" faces "Lille" in the opening match of the "Ligue 1" championship.
Last season, the "Rennes" club in France finished in 7th place. This summer, there have been many changes in "Rennes": the team's leader, Swedish national team goalkeeper Kim Kallstrom, young French star midfielder Yohann Gourcuff, Swiss national team striker Alexander Frei, and Senegalese defender Makhtar N'Diaye have all left the team. In their place, "Rennes" has so far added striker Daniel Moreira and former "Liverpool" defender Bruno Cheyrou.
