Former England national team goalkeeper David James is changing clubs - the 36-year-old veteran, who has been playing for the team since 2004, will wear the team's jersey in the upcoming season, the club's website announces.
The player, who cost a little over 1 million pounds, has signed a two-year contract, the financial terms of which are not disclosed.
The Englishman, who previously represented teams such as Liverpool, Aston Villa, and West Ham, has repeatedly stated that he would like to move to southern England, as his fiancée and many close relatives live in that part of the country. Negotiations between the clubs went smoothly and were finally concluded over the weekend.
It is worth noting that this is the fourth acquisition of ambitious Portsmouth this summer. Previously, the team leased Chelsea defender Glen Johnson and acquired experienced Arsenal defender Sol Campbell and midfielder David Thompson.
"We wanted all of these players two or three weeks ago, but unfortunately, negotiations do not happen as quickly," said Portsmouth coach Joe Jordan. "Our main task is to get everything done as quickly as possible so that we can move on to other tasks."
This is likely not the last purchase for Portsmouth this summer. The team's leaders intend to invite several more experienced footballers by the end of this month.
