In third place in Spain, president Joan Laporta of Barcelona announced that longtime club goalkeeper Luis Enrique will be officially honored in tomorrow's match against Racing, which will be his last at the Nou Camp stadium.
Laporta's statement yesterday was the first official confirmation that the 34-year-old goalkeeper will not renew his contract, which ends after this season, with Barcelona.
"Due to his dedication, he is like a symbol of the club," Laporta said. "We are very proud of him. We hope that the official ceremony will be a kind of thank you for all his contributions to the club."
During his eight seasons at Barcelona, Enrique won 7 titles, played 299 matches, and scored 109 goals. The Spaniard also represented the Spanish national team 62 times and scored 12 goals.
Luis Enrique joined Barcelona in 1996 and quickly became one of the favorite players among the club's fans, despite playing for bitter rival Real Madrid for five years before that.
