London's Arsenal has made an offer to acquire William Gallas, a defender for the French national team and another team in the UK capital, as confirmed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Tuesday.
Wenger also left the door open for the possible departure of defender Ashley Cole to Chelsea, as he did not include him in the squad for the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round matches.
Negotiations between the two English clubs have stalled, despite Chelsea offering 16.5 million pounds for the defender.
During a press conference, Arsenal's Wenger stated that there is a "50-50" chance that Cole will leave.
"Nothing is clear regarding Cole yet. I made an offer for Gallas, so that's the progress," the Frenchman said.
Cole did not play in the first match of the Premier League with Aston Villa on Saturday, despite expressing his desire to do so.
"I won't let Ashley on the field because the transfer issue is still unresolved. If he plays for Arsenal in European tournaments, he won't be able to do so after moving to another club playing in European tournaments," Wenger commented on the situation. "I want to resolve this issue as soon as possible, as the season has begun, and we want everything to be clear. We are not at odds with Ashley. If he can move to another club, it doesn't mean we no longer communicate with him."
