Nigerian national team striker Obafemi Martins has moved from Milan to Newcastle for a sum of 15 million euros. The 21-year-old player successfully passed his medical examination on Thursday and signed a five-year contract with the "Magpies."
Newcastle's head coach Glenn Roeder was short of strikers, as legendary Alan Shearer ended his career last year and Michael Owen suffered an injury at the World Cup. In a press conference, the coach said that O. Martins was his most desired player of the summer.
"There were a dozen other forwards who could have played for our team, but he was always the man I wanted. I need a quick striker," the coach said.
O. Martins extended his contract with Inter until 2010 last year, but this summer the club added Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Hernan Crespo to its ranks, forcing the Nigerian to look for a new team.
The diminutive striker, wearing Inter's kit, played in 88 matches and managed to score 28 goals.
The player's debut should take place in the weekend match against Aston Villa.
