The club that did not perform very well in the English Premier League championship has brought back French left-back defender Olivier Bernard to St James Park for the second time.
As the 26-year-old player rejected the services of Scotland's Glasgow Rangers in the summer, the defender moved to the "Magpies" club as a free agent.
The Frenchman left the Newcastle team in January 2005, when he moved to Southampton, and last August he moved to Rangers.
O. Bernard failed to secure a place in the starting lineup of the Rangers team and therefore decided to leave Scotland and return to Newcastle, who failed to acquire Chelsea's left-back Wayne Bridge.
Meanwhile, Leeds' general manager Shaun Harvey is not happy with the transfer, claiming that his team had already agreed to buy the defender and had already signed a contract.
"The club and the player had already agreed on the contract details, and he just needed to pass a medical check-up," said S. Harvey. "O. Bernard broke his word and moved to Newcastle club."
"We are very disappointed, but if the player does not want to represent the Leeds team, it is better to know it now, because we are interested in players who would be willing to sacrifice and give their all playing for us," the general manager did not hide his sadness.
The player became the fifth player to join the Newcastle eleven coached by manager Glenn Roeder. Previously, the "Magpies" acquired midfielders Antonio Sibierski and Damien Duff, as well as strikers Giuseppe Rossi and Obafemi Martins.
