Italian football mourns - on Monday, the former captain of the national team and Milan, as well as the president of the latter club in recent years, Giacinto Facchetti, who was taken away by cancer, ended his life.

The 64-year-old former defender had been ill for some time and on Monday lost the battle for his life. Born in the city of Treviglio, near Bergamo, G. Facchetti had a stunning football career. Starting to play for the "Trevigliese" club, he made his debut for "Inter" in May 1961 and after playing 18 seasons and hanging up his boots in 1978, he became a legend of the club.

Scoring goals as a left-back defender in 634 matches wearing the "Inter" jersey, he stood out with 75 goals. He also won four Italian championship titles, won the Intercontinental Cup and the European Cups twice each, and once won the Italian Cup competition.

In January 2004, the former legendary player who had been working as a vice president took over the presidency of "Inter" from the millionaire owner Massimo Moratti. During G. Facchetti's short time as president, the club won two Italian Cups, one Super Cup, and this summer celebrated the national championship titles they were awarded.
