In the Dutch "Eredivisie" championship, two games of the 3rd round were played. The current champion, Eindhoven's "PSV", easily defeated "Willem" with a score of 3-1 as guests, while "Heerenveen" also lost to "Excelsior" with the same result.
In the city of Tilburg, the local teams "Willem" and "PSV" tested their strengths. The champions started the match poorly and conceded the first goal in the 8th minute, scored by Mohamed Messoudi.
However, after conceding the goal, everything turned around. "PSV" scored three unanswered goals and secured their second victory this season. Edison Mendez equalized the score in the 14th minute, and in the 21st minute, the same player put his team ahead.
At the end of the first half, "Willem" defender Ibrahim Kargbo committed a foul in the penalty area, and the referee immediately awarded a penalty kick, sending the player off the field. Last year's top scorer for "PSV", Jefferson Farfan, stepped up to take the penalty. His shot left no chance for the "Willem" goalkeeper and secured his team's victory.
In the second match on Saturday, the league newcomers "Excelsior" and "Heerenveen" clashed. Surprisingly, the home team won, defeating the opponents with the same result, 3-1. The visitors took the lead first when Peter Hansson forced the "Excelsior" goalkeeper to fetch the ball out of the net in the 4th minute.
However, in the 10th minute, the player was sent off the field for a foul in the penalty area. Luigi Bruins converted this penalty kick and leveled the score. Towards the end of the second half, the home team earned another penalty kick, and L.Bruins, taking the shot for the second time, left no hope for the "Heerenveen" team's goalkeeper, with Andwele Slory securing the first victory for his team in this competition in the 82nd minute.
