On Tuesday, the head coach of the Faroe Islands national team, Jogvan Martin Olsenas, announced the 22 players who will play in the qualifiers for the 2008 European Championship matches against Lithuania and France.
As usual, the players of this state with less than 50 thousand inhabitants only play in the national championship of the Faroe Islands, and many of them only play football after work.
The core of the national team should consist of experienced players, such as 34-year-old defender Oli Johannesen who has represented his country 79 times. In addition to him, veterans can include 31-year-old midfielder Julian Johnsson (62 matches for the national team) and 36-year-old goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen (44 times).
However, six players without international match experience have been invited to the national team, and another six players have played fewer than five matches.
The most players in the national team - six - represent the famous Faroese club HB Toftir, which is second in the national championship. Meanwhile, three players represent the league leader EB Streymur.
Although the top scorer of this season's Faroe Islands championship, NSI forward Christian Hogni Jacobsen, has been called up to the national team, he is the only representative from the top scorers in the squad.
It is worth reminding that the Faroe Islands national team will play the qualifiers for the 2008 European Championship against Lithuania at home on October 7 and away against France on October 11.
