Over the past two years, Spanish champions and last season's winners of the UEFA Champions League will have to cope without their most productive team player, Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o, for the next five months.
S.Eto'o underwent surgery on Thursday for a meniscus problem in his right knee, during which the damaged part of the meniscus was not removed at the player's request. This means that S.Eto'o will have to be out of action for a longer period.
The 25-year-old star of the Cameroon national team suffered the injury during last Wednesday's UEFA Champions League match in Germany against Werder Bremen. In the 65th minute of the game, the player was carried off the field on a stretcher, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Barcelona's forward was the top scorer in the Spanish league last season with 26 goals. He also scored six goals in the UEFA Champions League.
Eidur Gudjohnsen from Iceland and Javier Saviola from the Argentine national team, who returned to the team this summer, are expected to replace the Cameroonian in the Barcelona lineup.
