The Spanish national team and Real Madrid defender Jose Antonio Reyes will not be able to play in the 2008 European Championship qualifying match against Sweden due to a torn muscle.
Currently playing for Real Madrid on loan, but belonging to the London Arsenal team, the defender was forced to leave practice early on Tuesday after feeling pain in his leg.
After examinations, it was revealed that the player has suffered a slight tear in his thigh muscle. The injury is not very serious, but Reyes will not be able to help his country's team in the match against Sweden, as well as in the friendly matches against the Argentine national team taking place four days later.
"Reyes complained of leg pain after the weekend La Liga match against Atletico Madrid and after the team doctors examined the soccer player's leg, it was revealed that he had slightly torn his thigh muscle," the official Real Madrid website announced.
With Reyes unable to represent the national team, team coach Luis Aragones called up Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta to replace him. Meanwhile, Reyes himself hopes that this injury will not have a major impact on his future performances with Real Madrid, as so far the season has been going great for him.
