Historical day in Greek football - the Athens court has decided that the enthusiast who was injured and partially blinded during a clash between fans and police at a match 3.5 years ago should receive compensation from the state institution for the physical damage suffered.
In a match in March 2003 between the fiercest rivals - Piraeus' Olympiacos and Athens' Panathinaikos - A. Dragoumis was injured by a flare thrown from the opposing fans, which is prohibited to bring into the stadium. A. Dragoumis had his glasses broken and one eye permanently blinded.
The court ruled that the police are guilty of improperly checking spectators' belongings before entering the stadium and awarded 40-year-old Achilleas Dragoumis 90 thousand euros.
Nevertheless, A. Dragoumis plans to appeal the decision and seek 1 million euros in compensation.
In the mentioned match, Piraeus' club won 3-0 and claimed the country's championship title for the seventh consecutive time.
