As reported by the website of the Lithuanian Football Federation, after the Lithuanian national team's dramatic victory against the Faroe Islands team, the team's head coach Algimantas Liubinskas stated that the match was difficult and although there was no lack of desire to win convincingly, missed opportunities and lack of playing practice hindered them. Meanwhile, LFF general director Julius Kvedaras mentioned that it would be unfair to judge the game without seeing the actual match.
Before the match against the Faroe Islands, there was much discussion in Lithuania about how many goals they would score against their opponents, but the optimistic forecasts did not come true, and the Lithuanians, who failed to take advantage of opportunities, had a hard time against the resilient team from a small country until ultimately breaking them down with Andrius Skerla's goal in the penultimate minute of the match.
"The match was very difficult. There was a huge desire to win in the national team. Indeed, we had numerous moments and chances near the opponents' goal, but we couldn't capitalize on the opportunities. The introduction of Beniusis and Kalonas was justified. The game was also made difficult by the fact that we had to win by any means, we couldn't afford to lose," said A. Liubinskas to the website futbolas.lt.
The coach also mentioned the unethical behavior of the opponents and identified the lack of playing practice as one of the reasons for the difficulty of the victory: "The players of the Faroe Islands national team simulated a lot during the match, wasted time. I can't say that their game surprised us with a radical change, they are clearly weaker in skill, and it was difficult for us to score a goal for various reasons. Once again, our principle is confirmed - we have to play as many friendly matches as possible."
"The most important thing for us was to win, that was the main goal of the match. Let's be happy with the victory, and discussions about what could have been different - better or worse - remain in the hands of the coaches. Those who criticize Lithuanian footballers probably understand little about football since their remarks show ignorant comments," said J. Kvedaras in response to critics.
Early on Sunday morning, the Lithuanian national team will depart for Frankfurt, where they will have a training camp. From Germany, the team, which has already changed its composition due to the absence of many players playing abroad, will travel to Kuwait, where on October 11 at 21:00, they will play a friendly match against the local national team. In November, a meeting is planned in Malta for the team, and in December, a three-match tour in Saudi Arabia.
