As reported on Wednesday by the Spanish "Primera" league champion club, the "Yellow Submarine" has reached an agreement with the "Colo Colo" club for the acquisition of Chilean national team defender Matias Fernandez.
The 20-year-old player, who was born in Argentina but moved to Chile when he was five, prepared to leave his homeland and sign a five and a half year contract with the Spanish club when the player transfer market opened in January.
Nevertheless, the defender will represent his native "Colo Colo" team until the end of this year.
"It was a very quick acquisition because we are confident that he is a good player and we believe that now is a great time to acquire him," said Villarreal president Fernando Roigas on the club's website.
At the beginning of this season, the "Yellow Submarine" club has been plagued by losses - due to a serious knee injury, summer signing from the "Arsenal" team Robert Pires will be out of the squad for at least another four months.
As mentioned earlier, last week defender Rodolfo Arrubarrena and forward Nihatas suffered injuries.
