Rotterdam's strategist Erwin Koeman, after a humiliating defeat to the toughest rivals Amsterdam's "Ajax" by 4-0 over the weekend, stated he does not want to see his players for at least a few days.
After Sunday's match, E. Koeman ordered his players to stay home until Wednesday, when they will begin preparations for the weekend match against Enschede's "Twente", currently holding the fourth place in the Dutch championship.
"Players can stay home for a few days and think everything over," a club representative told the press on Monday.
"Feyenoord", currently occupying the ninth place in the Dutch championship, started the match against "Ajax" very strongly and had at least three goal opportunities in the first ten minutes, but the visitors took the lead in the 12th minute with a goal by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. After this episode, the Amsterdam club took the initiative and had even 16 goal opportunities.
The Sunday defeat was "Feyenoord's" biggest loss to "Ajax" at home since 1995, when "Ajax" triumphed by 5-0.
However, in those years "Ajax" had one of the strongest teams of all time, winning the Champions League. Meanwhile, this year "Ajax" did not even reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, as they sensationally lost to "Copenhagen" in the third qualifying round.
"All our weak points were exposed," E. Koeman said after Sunday's match. "Let's be glad they scored only four goals. These were the worst team performances under my leadership."
In recent years, "Feyenoord" had the most dangerous striker duo in the Netherlands - Dirk Kuyt and Salomon Kalou. However, after leaving the team this summer, the UEFA Cup winners from 2002 struggle to find their way to the opponents' goal.
The fans of the financially troubled Rotterdam club demand the resignation of the club president, opening the doors to new investors.
Although the club received over 20 million euros for D. Kuyt and S. Kalou this summer, almost all the money was used to cover debts, rather than strengthening the team.
