Attacker Fred suffered an Achilles tendon injury and is unlikely to return to the field this year.
The "Lyon" attacking leader suffered the injury in a 4-1 victory against "Marseille" on Sunday. Subsequent tests showed that the player had a torn Achilles tendon, and doctors predict that the treatment for such an injury will last from six to eight weeks.
Forced rest will likely mean that the 22-year-old Brazilian national team attacker will miss the remaining three "Lyon" matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage against Kiev's "Dynamo," Madrid's "Real," and Bucharest's "Steaua."
Fred is the top scorer of this season for "Lyon," scoring five times in the French championship and adding two goals in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, tests revealed that the French national team defender Florent Malouda's injury is not as serious as initially thought, and he will be able to play in the weekend match against third-placed "Nancy."
