Round 33: Intrigues Among Leaders Almost Gone (Updated) © EuroFootball.com

O

n Wednesday, five matches of the 33rd round were played in the Lithuanian Championship. Taking advantage of the fact that "Ekranas" lost to "Vilnius" away and dropped to seventh place, the guests managed to secure a victory and the title of Lithuanian "A Lyga" champions with four rounds left in the championship, securing it for "FBK Kaunas". Unexpectedly, "Šiauliai" rose from the bottom of the table by defeating "Šilutė", "Sūduva" took advantage of the draw between "Atlantas" and "Žalgiris", intensifying the battle for the fourth place by defeating "Nevėžis".

One of the surprises of the round was recorded in Šilutė, where the absolute underdog of the championship welcomed the unstable "Šiauliai" club. The Šilutė team took the lead in the fifth minute when Russian legionnaire Ilgiz Fattakhov scored. Despite having several opportunities to increase their lead, the hosts failed to capitalize, and the guests could not equalize after the initial setback at the beginning of the match.

This was the fourth victory for Šilutė in the league this season, allowing them to rise from the bottom of the table, pushing another underdog, Nevėžis, down. In Marijampolė, Nevėžis had to admit the superiority of the new LFF Cup winners, Sūduva. The hosts dominated the match and scored in the 42nd minute through Latvian Aleksandrs Abramenko, adding a second goal in the 72nd minute through last weekend's Sūduva hero, veteran Darius Maciulevičius.

After this victory, Sūduva tied in points with Vilnius "Žalgiris", who played to a draw against Klaipėda's "Atlantas" away. The team from the port city took a two-goal lead through Maksim Morozov in the 38th and 53rd minutes, but their lead was short-lived as Raimondas Vilėniškis reduced the deficit in the 54th minute, and Valerijus Mižigurskis equalized in the 79th minute, helping the capital club secure a point.

An interesting match took place at Vilnius "Žalgiris" stadium, where in a recent and impressive form, "Vilnius" welcomed "Ekranas" trying to recover from disappointment in the LFF Cup. The Vilnius team showed a greater desire to win and took the lead in the 21st minute with a penalty converted by Brazilian Muller.

Attempting to level the score and rebound from the opponent's attacks, the hosts scored a second goal at the very end of the match, as Tom Ražanauskas broke through and passed to Adilson, whose shot was deflected into his own net by Aurimas Kučys. For the first time in history, "Vilnius" prevailed over "Ekranas" and secured their fifth victory in the last seven matches, climbing to seventh place in the tournament table and gaining hope to fight for higher positions, while giving "Kaunas" a chance to secure the champions title.

The Kaunas team, which led the "A Lyga" all season, secured victory in a match held in Vilnius recently. "Kaunas" defeated third-place "Vėtra" in a tough battle, with the only goal of the match scored by Polish legionnaire Arkadiusz Klimek from a corner kick in the 32nd minute. With three rounds left until the end of the season, "Kaunas" increased their lead over "Ekranas" to 15 points and remained unbeatable, practically securing second place for the Panevėžys team as well, as for "Vėtra" in third place to climb higher they would need not only to defeat "Ekranas" twice in the upcoming matches and secure at least one more victory, but also hope for the opponents to stumble in other matches.
