The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed that they have offered the former Italian national team coach Marcello Lippi the position of head coach of the Mexican national team.
58-year-old M. Lippi led the Italian national team to the World Cup final this year, where they defeated the French national team after a penalty shootout.
"I can confirm that M. Lippi is one of the candidates for this position," said federation general secretary Decio de Maria.
Other serious candidates include Hugo Sanchez, considered the best Mexican footballer of all time and current coach of "Necaxa," former German national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and Argentine Americo Gallego, who currently manages "Toluca."
M. Lippi himself hopes to return to football as soon as possible. After Italy's victory in Germany, he relinquished the position of Italian national team coach to Roberto Donadoni and took a break from football.
According to "Gazzetta dello Sport," the "Napoli" club is interested in bringing the coach back to the elite level in Italy. It is believed that "Napoli" wants to invite M. Lippi, who coached the team in the 1993/94 season, for the next season, and they are currently negotiating quietly as they do not want to disturb current head coach Edy Reja, who currently holds the second position in the "Serie B" championship with the team.
