The 33-year-old player got injured in the match against the World Cup champion Italy, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He got injured just a few minutes into the game while trying to clear the ball with his fists from his penalty area, unsuccessfully landing on his right leg and suffering a knee injury, which forced him to leave the field on a stretcher. Later it was revealed that the goalkeeper would need surgery.
"His leg is swollen," said Fenerbahce club doctor Ethem Kavukcu. - "Our medical staff will take care of him until the operation, but his ligaments are severely damaged and he will be out of action for at least six months."
The goalkeeper, who defended the colors of the Turkish national team excellently in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan and managed to win bronze medals, will be replaced in the "Fenerbahce" team by his teammate both in the UEFA Cup and in the Turkish championship, Volkan Demirel, both in the club and in the national team.
