Having barely won five points in 12 rounds, the Spanish Tarragona club dismissed Spanish coach Luis Angel Cesar from the position of head coach on Monday.
On Sunday, the final drop in the cup of team leaders was the 3-2 defeat at home to "Mallorca".
"The board wants to thank the coach for leading the team to the highest league and for exemplary behavior in difficult times, especially in recent weeks," the official club website stated in a statement.
"This is a understandable decision. When coaches do not win matches, they have to be fired. That's what happened," L.A.Cesar himself said at a press conference on Monday. "There is no point in looking back and guessing what I could have done differently. I am proud of what I have achieved in two years at this club, and in the 12 games of this season, the players did everything they could."
Last season, the Catalan club won a ticket to the top Spanish league for the first time in 56 years, but in the first 12 rounds they only managed to win one game and earned five points, occupying the last place in the standings. In the King's Cup, they were eliminated by "Valladolid", who plays in the second division of Spain.
The club is also last in the league in goals conceded - the weak "Gimnastic" defense has already conceded 26 goals.
In a statement, "Gimnastic" said that former L.A. Cesar assistant Kiko Ramirez and fitness coach Xavier Bartolo will temporarily lead the team.
