Finishing in fourth place in the English championship, the team's head coach, Frenchman Gerard Houllier, was dismissed.
Houllier, who has been coaching the team for six years, said goodbye to the club and thanked the players and fans for their support during a difficult season. The coach also mentioned that although he wanted to stay longer, he was leaving after reaching a mutual agreement with everyone involved.
"I have four important memories that I will take with me: Michael Owen scoring a winning goal with his left foot against Arsenal, Gary McAllister receiving the best player award after the match against Alaves, the mosaic when I recovered from heart surgery, and Steven Gerrard walking his daughter around the pitch on the last day of the season," reminisced Houllier. "I arrived here six years ago as a Liverpool fan, but Liverpool won't leave me. I will come back to watch the team as a fan."
Now the club will be looking for a new coach, with candidates such as Martin O'Neill from Celtic, Gordon Strachan from Southampton, and Charlton's strategist Alan Curbishley being mentioned.
