The leadership of Liverpool club is considering the possibility of leaving "Goodison Park" stadium, where the team has been playing for 114 years, and moving to a new stadium outside the city limits.
According to plans that have faced opposition from most fans, the new stadium would be located near the town of Kirkby. The implementation partner of this project would be the largest chain of shopping centers in the UK, "Tesco," and the "Knowsley Borough Council."
"Goodison Park" stadium has belonged to Everton club since 1892, when the team had to leave "Anfield," to which their local rival Liverpool moved.
The current stadium can only hold just over 40 thousand spectators, and the local layout does not allow for expansion to accommodate a larger number of fans.
At the annual shareholders' meeting on Monday, club chairman Bill Kenwright explained that the move is vital for Everton's future.
"I would gladly stay here (ed. note-"Goodison Park") forever. But financially, it is not beneficial for Everton," said B. Kenwright.
Although the club's leader emphasized that the move to Kirkby is still under consideration, Everton will not be looking for a new location for the stadium.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is finalizing plans to move to a new 60 thousand-seat stadium near Stanley Park, not far from Anfield, before the 2009-2010 season.
