Welsh Football Association will try to win the right to host the 2016 European Championship for their country. However, Wales will try to seek this right together with their neighboring Scotland.
On Tuesday, Welsh Sports Minister Alan Pugh instructed to explore the possibilities of hosting the European Championship together with Scotland.
"It is worth considering the prospects of hosting the competition together with Scotland," - added Welsh Football Association (FAW) secretary David Collins, who also aims for the UEFA Cup final to be held in the Welsh capital Cardiff in 2011 or 2012.
By the way, Scotland along with Ireland already wanted to host the 2008 championship, but lost this battle to Austria and Switzerland.
The main obstacle for Wales to host the European Championship could be the lack of spacious stadiums. Currently, there is only one spacious arena in the country – the Cardiff "Millennium" Stadium, accommodating 75,000 spectators. However, the construction of Swansea's "Liberty" club stadium with 20,000 seats will finish soon, and new 30,000-seat "Cardiff City" team houses will be built. Meanwhile, in Scotland there are six stadiums accommodating over 40,000 spectators.
Speaking to BBC Radio, D. Collins also emphasized the importance of discussing this issue and coordinating certain details with the Welsh government, "Cardiff City," and "Millennium" Stadium management, police, airports, and the Tourism Board.
"The Welsh government and the Football Association will make every effort to benefit Welsh football," - promised FAW secretary D. Collins.
It is still unclear where the 2012 European Championship will be held. Russia, Italy, Ukraine together with Poland are contenders for hosting the event.
