On Friday, at the UEFA headquarters in the Swiss city of Nyone, the drawing ceremony for the UEFA Cup Round of 16 and Quarterfinals took place, after which the pairings for the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals became clear.
The teams were divided into four baskets - in the Round of 16, group winners will face teams that finished third in their groups, while the remaining teams will play against teams eliminated from the Champions League. Teams from the same country could not face each other.
The Round of 16 draw wasn't easy for the tournament favorites - defending champions "Sevilla" will play against last year's semifinalist, Bucharest's "Steaua", while Bremen's "Werder", who dropped out of the Champions League, will face the 1992 tournament winners, Amsterdam's "Ajax". One of the most interesting matches will be a repeat of the 1974 final, as Rotterdam's "Feyenoord" will take on London's "Tottenham".
"Livorno" with Tomas Danilevicius will play against Barcelona's "Espanyol", while the 2005 champion Moscow's "CSKA" with Deividas Semberas will compete against Haifa's "Maccabi". Meanwhile, the Quarterfinals draw put these pairs against each other, so if successful in the Round of 16, two "Lithuanian" clubs would play against each other.
The Round of 16 matches will be played on February 14/15 and 22 next year, while the Quarterfinals will take place on March 8 and 14/15.
